Accessioning and Donations: A Vital Part of the Air and Space Force Archival Collections
The Air Force Historical Research Agency's Air and Space Force Archival Collections are a treasure trove of historical documents, annual history reports, and multimedia memorabilia that document the United States military's journey into the skies and beyond. A significant part of the archive's growth and enrichment comes from the process of accessioning and the generous donations received from various sources. The Accessioning Division (AFHRA/AC) oversees the addition of incoming material to the AFHRA’s collection, creates metadata for the content management system, creates microform records, migrates various forms of media, and digitizes analog records. The Archival Collections at the AFHRA includes documentary materials that are relevant to the history of the United States Air Force and United States Space Force. Each of the collections are of sufficient significance to warrant permanent retention as part of the historical records of the Department of the Air Force.

The accessioning process ensures that every item in the archive is accounted for and can be traced back to its source.

The Process of Donating
Donating to the Air Force Historical Research Agency involves a few steps. We are always on the lookout for new and exciting items related to the rich history of the U.S. Air Force. Due to the volume of offers that occur each day, we cannot accept unsolicited material dropped off at the Agency. Potential donors are encouraged to contact the archive with details about the items they wish to donate. The Accessions Division personnel then assesses the item’s relevance and condition. If the item is accepted, the donor and the archive agree on the terms of the donation, and the accessioning process begins. Donations can only be dropped off at the Agency after written coordination/confirmation with the Accession Chief or Document Control Team.
