5 Air Support Operations Squadron

Lineage.  Constituted 5 Communications Squadron, Air Support, on 15 May 1942.  Activated on 22 May 1942.  Redesignated: 5 Air Support Communication Squadron on 11 Jan 1943; 5 Air Support Control Squadron on 20 Aug 1943; 5 Tactical Air Communications Squadron on 1 Apr 1944.  Inactivated on 28 Nov 1945.  Disbanded on 8 Oct 1948.  Reconstituted, and redesignated 5 Air Support Operations Squadron on 24 Jun 1994.  Activated on 1 Jul 1994.


Assignments.   I Ground Air (later, I Air) Support Command, 15 May 1942; Fifth Air Force, Jun 1943; 308 Bombardment Wing, 25 Jul 1945; XIII Bomber Command, 20 Oct-28 Nov 1945.  1 Air Support Operations Group, 1 Jul 1994-.   

 

Stations.   Mitchel Fld, NY, 22 May 1942; Lebanon, TN, 9 Sep 1942; Morris Fld, NC, c. 21 Oct 1942-8 May 1943; Brisbane, Australia, 13 Jun 1943; Cairns, Australia, 26 Jul 1943; Port Moresby, New Guinea, 11 Sep 1943; Finschhaven, New Guinea, 29 Feb 1944; Hollandia, New Guinea, 30 Aug 1944; Morotai Island, 1 Oct 1944; Clark Fld, Luzon, 14 May-28 Nov 1945.  Ft Lewis, WA, 1 Jul 1994-.  

 

Operations.  Combat in Southwest Pacific, Jul 1943-1945.  Air support parties served with US Marines and Australian and US ground forces, directing air support missions for the forces they served.  Participated in numerous amphibious assault landings.  Supported combat operations during the Global War on Terror, 2001-.
