36 Rescue Sq (AETC)

Lineage.  Constituted as 36 Air Rescue Squadron on 17 Oct 1952.  Activated on 14 Nov 1952.  Discontinued, and inactivated, on 18 Sep 1960.  [Activated and] organized on 18 Jun 1961.  Redesignated as: 36 Air Recovery Squadron on 1 Jul 1965; 36 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron on 8 Jan 1966.  Inactivated on 30 Nov 1972.  Redesignated 36 Rescue Flight on 1 Apr 1993.  Activated on 1 May 1993.  Redesignated as 36 Rescue Squadron on 14 Aug 2015.

Operations.  Combat rescue in Korean War, Nov 1952-Jul 1953.  Search, rescue, and recovery missions in Japan and the waters around Japan, 1952-1960 and 1961-1972.  In 1966, recovered Gemini 8 space capsule with astronauts, including Neil Armstrong.  Beginning in May 1993, operated helicopters for survival training.
