Served to grade of Private First Class, Aviation Section, Signal Corps, 1917-1918; commissioned Second Lieutenant, Aviation Section, Signal Officer Reserve Corps, January 1918. Career assignments include: various duties as company grade officer, 1918-1923; Chief, Engines and Plane Maintenance Branch, McCook Field, 1923-1925; various duties as field grade officer, 1926-1941; Assistant to Chief of Air Corps, 1941-1942; member, Joint Strategic Survey Committee, Joint Chiefs of Staff, 1942-1946; Commander, Air University, 1946-1948; Vice Chief of Staff, USAF, 1948-1950. Died at Fort Myer, Arlington, VA. Fairchild AFB, WA named in his honor.

Contains material on his early career at McCook Field, OH and Langley Field, VA (1923-1926). Also contains some material on strategic bombing and establishment of Air University. Collection also includes materials pertaining to Fairchild's participation in the Pan American Flight (1926-1928). Includes copies of some reports on aircraft (1923-1925) and copies of various studies on several aviation and defense related topics (1932-1940). Also contains various course materials from Army Industrial College (1935-1938), Army War College (1936-1937), and Air Corps Tactical School (1937-1940). Also includes copies of speeches, press releases, and articles by Fairchild and various other materials relating to his tenure as Commander of Air University (1946-1948). Includes copies of some of his personnel files and military flying records (1918-1950), and trips (1966-1975), and copies of selected magazines (1970-1981). Also includes a copy of the Handbook of Radio Range Data (1935). Also contains numerous photographs (1903-1976) including those taken during World War II, during the Pan American Flight (1926-1927), of the Lockheed XP-80A (1948), and of the Besler Engine Mounting System (1932).
