Born in Nogales, AZ. BS, United States Military Academy, 1940. Command and General Staff School, 1943; Air Command and Staff School, 1948; Air War College, 1954. Served to grade of Private, Coast Artillery Corps, 1935-1936. Commissioned Second Lieutenant, Infantry, June 1940; transferred to Air Corps, March 1941. Career assignments include: various duties as company and field grade officer, 1940-1951; successively Deputy Commandant and Commandant, Air Command and Staff College, 1954-1957; various staff duties and commands, 1957-1968; Commander, 3rd Air Division, 1968-1970; Commander, Eighth Air Force, 1970; Commander, Air University, 1970-1973. Retired November 1973.

Official papers from Gillem's Air Force career. Includes some official correspondence (1968-1970) while Commander of 3rd Air Division. Also includes many copies of Eighth Air Force Regulations 500-1 to 500-22 (1968-1970).
