Served to grade of Sergeant, Aviation Section, Signal Enlisted Reserve Corps, 1917; commissioned First Lieutenant, Aviation Section, Signal Officer Reserve Corps, September 1917. Career assignments include: various duties as company and field grade officer, 1917-1942; Commander, VIII Fighter Command, 1942-1943; Commander, First Air Force, 1943-1946. Retired March 1946. Hunter AFB, GA was named in his honor. Died in Savannah, GA.

Personal collection of various materials accumulated by Hunter. Includes personal correspondence (1918-1972), scrapbooks (1918-1930, 1942-1943), and numerous photographs. Also includes news clippings (1917-1979) covering such subjects as the National Airplane Races of 1922 and the Air Armada Maneuvers of 1931. Also includes speeches made by Hunter and various materials pertaining to Hunter AFB, GA.
