Served to grade of Private First Class, Aviation Section, Signal Enlisted Reserve Corps, 1917-1918; commissioned Second Lieutenant, Aviation Section, Signal Officer Reserve Corps, April 1918. Career assignments include: various duties as company and field grade officer, 1918-1942; Commanding General, IV Bomber Command, 1942; Deputy Commander, Hawaiian Air Force, 1942-1943; Commanding General, V Bomber Command, 1943. Missing 26 March 1943 in an airplane crash in vicinity of New Guinea. Ramey AFB, PR (now inactive) named in his honor.
