Career assignments include: various duties as company and field grade officer, 1942-1949; successively Deputy Director and Director of Personnel, HQ Strategic Air Command (SAC), 1949-1952; various SAC units, 1952-1961; Director of Personnel, HQ SAC, 1961; successively Deputy Director and Director of Operations, HQ SAC, 1961-1964; Deputy Commander, Eighth Air Force, 1964-1965; Deputy Commander, Fifteenth Air Force, 1965-1966; Commander, 2nd Air Division, 1966-1969; Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel, HQ USAF, 1969-1970, Assistant Vice Chief of Staff, HQ USAF, 1970-1973. Retired 1973. Died 4 Oct 2004.

Official papers relating to Russell's Air Force career. Includes official correspondence (1946-1969), some speeches by Russell (1964-1966), and minutes of various unofficial boards (1963-1964). Includes correspondence between Russell and General Holloway, Commander-in-Chief of SAC (1966-1969), and materials on automatic data processing in the USAF (1961-1971). Also includes some copies of Russell's personnel records and some photograph albums, primarily from duty as Assistant Vice Chief of Staff (1970-1973).
