(1907-1988). Captain Merhar was born in Pueblo, Colorado on 22 Feb 1907 and died in 1988. He entered the Army Air Corp on 4 June 1941 and was commissioned while overseas in the European Theater of Operations on 8 October 1943. Captain Merhar was released from active duty on 25 January 1946 and from the U.S. Air Force reserve on 28 September 1957. The Captain commanded the 9th Air Division Photo Laboratory. His photography collection may be viewed at: Capt. Joseph J. Merhar Jr. collection.

The personal papers are a rare collection due to the fact that it is primarily photograph albums with captions and dates. The albums document daily life overseas, World War II operations, distinguished guests, arrival and performance of various aircraft, allied forces, strike damage, targets, and awards and decorations.
