 
North American P-82 "Twin Mustang"
North American P-82 "Twin Mustang" at Muroc Army Air Base, California. Official flight view of the "Twin Mustang", the Army Air Forces long-range fighter. Powered by two 12-cylinder Allison V-1710 engines, the P-82 is capable of a top speed of over 475 miles per hour. Rate of climb for the aircraft is over 5000 feet a minute. Standard armament is six .50 caliber machine guns, but the P-82 can also carry eight additional guns in a special center nacelle.

B-29 Transition School
High over the Alabama River, a Superfortress wings home from a training mission, to its base at this AAF Training Command B-29 Transition School. Here at Maxwell Field airplane commanders, pilots and flight engineers get their training as three-man teams. Each trio spends about three weeks in ground school and five weeks in the air learning as a unit to handle the huge craft. Instructor teams consisting of one pilot instructor and one flight engineer instructor, take four student trios through the entire course. (24824 A.C.)

Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress" levels off for a run over target. Photo shows the chin turret with .50 caliber machine guns featured in later models. The B-17 weighed about 60,000 lbs., carried a bomb load of 6000 lbs., at a speed of approximately 300 miles per hour.
