Died 23 December 1943 in P-38 crash near Burbank, CA. Dyess AFB, YX named in his honor. Author of The Dyess Story (1944, reprint 1976).

Official papers relating to Dyess' experiences and observations while a prisoner of war in the Philippines from April 1942-April 1943. Includes personal experiences while commanding the 21st Pursuit Squadron from 20 November 1941 until his capture by the Japanese on 9 April 1942. Also includes vivid descriptions of the Bataan Death March, daily life in the POW camps, Japanese atrocities, and the escape of Dyess and several other Americans into the Jungle where they joined guerrilla forces operating against the Japanese.
